Last year, replica Blancpain successfully launched the Air Command Flyback Chronograph, a modern take on its 1950s vintage chronograph design. It was presented in two materials, titanium and red gold, with a size of 42.5 mm, and received a good response. Surprisingly, it is presented in a much smaller size of 36.2mm this year, targeting not only women but also some vintage collectors who prefer the compact size of the past.
For the titanium version, grade 23 titanium was used instead of the commonly used grade 2 or grade 5 titanium. It is an alpha-beta titanium alloy based on grade 5 titanium, which is stronger against corrosion by various chemicals and has high tensile strength. Grade 23 titanium was also used on the previous 42.5mm model. And like the previous size version, it comes with a red gold case. Both versions have a diameter of 36.2mm and a thickness of 11.5mm in common, and are water resistant to 30m. The two-way rotating titanium or red gold bezel features a polished blue ceramic insert that matches the blue sunburst dial. Because it has a rotating bezel, the size may feel smaller than the published specifications.
Characteristic elements inheriting the military pilot chronograph (original air command) supplied to the US Air Force in the 1950s – tachymeter scale, two-counter design decorated with snail patterns, hands resembling a syringe – are always followed in succession to the previous work. You can check. At first glance, it looks so similar to the men’s 42.5mm model that it’s hard to tell them apart. So it may be a little boring, but since the previous work was so successful, you probably didn’t feel the need to make any design modifications other than to diversify the size.
The movement is equipped with an in-house automatic chronograph caliber F188B of integrated design (frequency 3 Hz, power reserve of 40 hours). Based on the F185 of the famous Frederick Piguet Bass (1185), it can be viewed as a version with a modified chronograph layout (omitting the permanent second hand at 6 o’clock) and even the date display removed. Although there are some crucial differences from the high-beat caliber (F388B) mounted on the 42.5mm size such as frequency and power reserve, the fact that it supports the chronograph mechanism of the column wheel and vertical clutch structure and the flyback function continues the design of the stable base.
The launch price of the new Air Command Flyback Chronograph 36.2mm in Korea is 21.07 million won for the titanium version (Ref. AC03-12B40-63) and 34.82 million won for the red gold version (Ref. AC03-36B40-63). were set for each. It’s probably a bit cheaper than the men’s 42.5mm version.
