Formula One (F1) fanatics will not know the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team. Mercedes-AMG Petronas, led by the on-going legend Lewis Hamilton, never missed the Constructor’s Champion from 2014 to 2021, and reached the unprecedented height of ‘8 consecutive wins’. Lewis Hamilton was the driver’s champion a total of six times during the same period (2014-15, 2017-2020). He unfortunately missed the title in the last game last year, when he competed against Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen in an all-time high. Had the results been reversed, Lewis Hamilton would have surpassed the legendary Michael Schumacher (7-time Driver Champion) by claiming his eighth driver’s championship.
Schaffhausen-based watchmaker IWC has always stood by the side of Mercedes-AMG Petronas and Lewis Hamilton while writing a new history for F1. IWC and Mercedes-AMG Petronas signed an official partnership in 2013. The watch to commemorate their friendship was first released in 2019. At the time, replica IWC produced two special editions based on the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar and Pilot Chronograph. Three years later, another edition has been unveiled, which will also serve as the official watch of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team this year. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team” was unveiled ahead of the F1 1st Miami Grand Prix to be held on May 6-8 in Florida, USA. One™ Team”) is the protagonist who will write a new chapter.
“Watchmaking and racing are both the result of teamwork,” said IWC CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr. Toto Wolff, Director and CEO of Mercedes-AMG Petronas, said, “We are very pleased to present the first official team watch developed in collaboration with IWC. “It emphasizes a sense of belonging and a sense of belonging, while clearly demonstrating the strong relationship we have built with IWC over the past decade. I’m really looking forward to seeing the team wear their watches on the Miami track this week.” Likewise, Mercedes-AMG Petronas race engineers, mechanics, and all team members will wear this edition to compete in the Miami Grand Prix as well as major Grand Prix to come.
The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team” Edition, which stands out in many ways, is literally revamped on the basis of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41, which was successfully replaced last year. The point of observation is, again, the color. The iconic turquoise color of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas permeates every part of the watch, including the logo, hands and indexes. Coincidentally, the color is close to turquoise, which is said to be the most “hot” in the current watch industry, so there is a lot of anticipation. The dial of the new product has a black background and each color is different, but the basic configuration is the same as usual. The hour/minute hands and the triangular markings at 12 o’clock derived from non-urenes and the hour indexes at 3/6/9 o’clock are surface coated with a cyan Super-LumiNova to match each printing color.
The 41mm diameter and 14.6mm thick case is made of grade 5 titanium, which is easier to machine than the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” released last year. Thanks to this, you can expect not only light weight but also excellent durability. Water resistance is 100m. The case design is not significantly different from the previous one. Like a traditional pilot’s watch, it’s simple without being superfluous. The caseback reveals the movement through a sapphire crystal, as if it was changed when it entered the 41mm line. The sapphire crystal rim is marked with the words ‘Pilot Watch Chronograph’ and ‘Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’ in turquoise, respectively, giving the watch a special meaning. The mounted movement is an automatic in-house chronograph caliber 69385. Since it is a next-generation engine that has been used continuously since before the generation change of the pilot’s watch chronograph, there is nothing special about it. It has a frequency of 28,800 vph per hour and a power reserve of 46 hours. The chronograph controls are paired with a column wheel and a vertical clutch, like a modern movement. Winding is done through a pole-winding designed similar to the brand’s signature Pellaton winding. Since it is a bidirectional method, the rotor produces power by winding the main spring regardless of the direction of rotation.
The strap comes with a turquoise rubber strap and a black calfskin strap with the same color stitching. Each strap can be changed easily and without tools thanks to IWC’s independently developed EasX-CHANGE® system.
The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team” Edition (Ref. IW388108) is presented as a regular, not a limited edition. However, it will be sold only on the IWC official website. The price is 10.10 million won.
